Humans versus apes. So much in common, yet unable to coexist. Both sides have lost too much, but still, the only option seems to be war. In the original Planet of the Apes films we saw the outcome of that war, and everything points to the new War for the Planet of the Apes repeating it. The trailer sends a clear message: Caesar and his ape colony didn't start the war, however, they have every intention of ending it.
A Franchise Reborn
Two films, nearly $1.2 billion in box office revenue, and a new era for what is without a doubt one of the most important science fiction sagas on the big screen. We all know Planet of the Apes. One way or another, we've come across some historical scenes, including Charlton Heston pounding the sand and screaming "You maniacs! You blew it all up!". The later films weren't as good as the first, and we definitely don't talk about the... remake by Tim Burton (we scare the little ones at home with that), but something changed with the new reboot. Closing the First Trilogy
War for the Planet of the Apes represents the closing of the first trilogy, since in October Fox confirmed a fourth installment is in development. It's a very important leap of faith for a distributor known for its conservative profile and its quickness to pass the scissors. The real budget for this new movie is still unknown, but if we go by previous facts, the franchise is becoming more complex and more expensive (from $93 million in the first installment to $170 million in the second). The plot of War for the Planet of the Apes presents a Caesar exhausted by human violence, humans who desperately try to turn the world back to what it was, and whose first action to achieve it seems to be the extermination of the apes.
Cast and Release Date
The two most important names in the cast of War for the Planet of the Apes are the aforementioned Andy Serkis as Caesar, and Woody Harrelson, the "Colonel" who acts as leader of the human militia. The release date for the movie is July 14, 2017, and it won't have it easy, considering other big hitters like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Valerian, and the film adaptation of The Dark Tower.
