Anthropic’s Form S-1, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on October 26, 2026, says Claude wrote more than 90% of contributions to the company’s codebase in September 2026. The filing also reports that average daily code-contribution volume per engineer in the three months ended September 30, 2026, exceeded the 2024 average by more than 45 times. What the two coding figures measure

MeasureAnthropic-reported figurePeriod
Claude-written share of codebase contributionsMore than 90%September 2026
Average daily code-contribution volume per engineerMore than 45 times the 2024 averageThree months ended September 30, 2026, compared with the year ended December 31, 2024

For the second figure, Anthropic describes code-contribution volume per engineer but does not name the unit or explain how contributions are counted. The S-1 says certain operating metrics are calculated using Anthropic’s internal systems and tools and have not been independently verified by third parties.

Engineers still direct and review Claude’s work

Anthropic describes Claude Code as an agent for multi-step engineering tasks. The company says its engineers increasingly direct and review the agent’s work rather than write code line by line. A contribution share therefore sits alongside substantial human involvement in the workflow.

The filing gives a separate internal benchmark: Claude’s success rate on open-ended engineering problems was about 90% in September 2026, up roughly 50 percentage points over nine months. Anthropic says its internal benchmarks use company-selected tasks, datasets and evaluation criteria; it cautions that results may not be comparable across developers.

Individual accounts describe both faster task completion and the effort of supervising generated work. In one Claude Code discussion, a developer said work that had taken a week could be built in hours, while keeping track of what the agent was doing felt mentally exhausting. Other commenters described fatigue and the work of checking whether changes stayed aligned with the intended architecture.

The reported code growth came alongside a larger workforce

Anthropic reported that its headcount grew more than fivefold between December 31, 2024, and September 30, 2026, reaching about 5,300 employees. A majority worked in research, engineering and product development.

Anthropic warns about review capacity and audit trails

Anthropic’s S-1 warns that the pace and volume of agentic actions may exceed people’s ability to evaluate them meaningfully. It also says that keeping comprehensive records of decisions and actions across complex, multi-step workflows is technically challenging.
