Xbox and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS announced on September 9, 2026, that Xbox will publish PHYSINT, while PlayStation Studios has stepped away from its collaboration on the game. Hideo Kojima says development of the unreleased action-espionage title is ongoing. The big player-facing details, however, are still open: the final platforms, exclusivity terms and release date have not been announced.
Xbox is now publishing PHYSINT
The announcement expands an existing Xbox relationship with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS that already included OD. It now covers PHYSINT as well, with Xbox identified as the game’s publisher.
That is the confirmed change. It does not establish that PHYSINT will be an Xbox exclusive, launch on PC at the same time, or disappear from PlayStation. Xbox’s announcement did not list the game’s final platforms or any exclusivity terms.
For players, the safest reading is straightforward: the business relationship behind PHYSINT has changed, but the game’s eventual access strategy has not been publicly defined.
How the partnership changed
PHYSINT was announced in 2024 as a collaboration between PlayStation and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Kojima had presented it as an action-espionage game with a strongly cinematic approach, describing it as an interactive work designed to feel like a movie as well.
The next major turn came in mid-June 2026. According to Hideo Kojima’s account, PlayStation Studios notified KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS that it would cancel the project. Kojima says the studio then spent approximately three months looking for a new partner before choosing Xbox.
The public announcements describe that break in different terms. PlayStation Studios said it had decided to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. Kojima described receiving notice that the project would be canceled. Those statements establish PlayStation’s departure from the collaboration, but they do not provide a detailed explanation of the decision.
On September 9, Xbox and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS announced their expanded partnership. PlayStation Studios published its statement the following day. Kojima also said that development was continuing, so the project itself did not end with the change in partner.
What PHYSINT is—and what remains unknown
PHYSINT is Hideo Kojima’s unreleased action-espionage game, created by KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. The project remains in development according to Kojima, but several details players normally use to plan ahead are still unavailable.
| Dimension | Original announced arrangement | Current announced arrangement |
| PHYSINT partner and publisher | PlayStation Studios was attached to the project announced in 2024. | Xbox is the announced publisher after expanding its relationship with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. |
| Project status | The project was announced as a PlayStation and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS collaboration. | Hideo Kojima says development is ongoing under the new partnership. |
| Relationship scope | The original arrangement centered on the PHYSINT game collaboration. | The Xbox–KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS relationship now includes PHYSINT, continues to include OD, and extends across film and television. |
There is no announced release date. The final platform list is also unavailable, and no exclusivity agreement has been disclosed publicly. That means the announcement answers who is publishing the game, but not where or when players will be able to play it.
Why the platform question matters
Publisher, developer and platform are different roles. KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS is developing the game, Xbox is the announced publisher, and Hideo Kojima is its creator and the studio’s founder. None of those facts, by themselves, confirms that the game will run only on Xbox hardware or that a PlayStation version has been removed.
So, will PHYSINT still come to PlayStation? The current public announcements do not resolve that question. PlayStation Studios’ withdrawal from the collaboration does not by itself establish the final platform list, and Xbox’s publishing announcement does not supply one.
The same caution applies to PC timing. Some players have welcomed the possibility of broader access, but no simultaneous PC launch has been announced. There is also no public explanation establishing why PlayStation stepped away. Budget, sales expectations, development costs, creative disagreements and other theories have circulated, but none is a confirmed reason in the public statements.
For now, the useful takeaway is less dramatic than the console-war version of the story: PHYSINT has a new announced publisher, while the details that determine where players can experience it remain to be defined.
The partnership also extends beyond games
Xbox and KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS said their expanded relationship will include collaboration across film and television. That is a broader media partnership, not a confirmation that a specific PHYSINT movie or television series is in production.
No adaptation title, cast, platform or production schedule was announced alongside the publishing change. The confirmed scope is therefore the collaboration itself; any connection to a particular adaptation remains unestablished.
The immediate consequence for players is clear enough: PHYSINT is continuing under an Xbox publishing arrangement after PlayStation Studios stepped away. The next announcement that really matters will be the one that names the platforms, release timing and any exclusivity terms.
