Detect Duplicate Files on Your System with DoubleKiller

Many users have solved their storage problems by brute force, that is, by adding additional drives with greater capacity. But more than once, that space disappears like magic, courtesy of duplicate files that we basically lose track of. In the past we have recommended several tools to avoid that, however, some enthusiasts insist on defending the front with DoubleKiller, a program from 2007.

A standard four-terabyte hard drive averages 100 euros at the moment, and for that same price we can buy a one-terabyte SSD. These aren't terrible numbers, but at the same time we understand that the economy is not the same as a few months ago. I've noticed that many users have been forced to extend the life cycle of their computers, and work with what they already have. If there's no possibility to expand storage, then we must take advantage of free cloud options, and step up our file management, including the detection and removal of duplicates.

How to detect duplicate files with DoubleKiller

This is where DoubleKiller steps in, a program developed by Big Bang Enterprises. The latest free version dates back to July 2007, but one of the first things we learn with the software is that "the newest is not always the best". All you have to do to start using DoubleKiller is go to the Options tab and configure the drives to scan in the Folders section. If you need to exclude a specific type of extension, you can do so in the Exclude Files area.

DoubleKiller prioritizes the comparison of size and CRC32 checksum to confirm that files are identical, however, it is possible to add names and dates as part of its general analysis. Another parameter that serves as a filter is the attribute of each file. For example, everything with the "System" label is excluded from the final results, but you can do the same with read-only files and hidden files.

DoubleKiller has a free version, and its limitations are essentially functionality. It is a bit slower than the Pro edition (although we didn't notice it here because we used SSDs), the maximum file size detected is 2 GB, and it does not allow deleting files directly from its interface (you have to open the folder first). Apart from that, we are talking about a very efficient program, which does not exceed 800 kilobytes, and works very well even with the latest editions of Windows. A classic, recommended.
