The party is missing one thing: a plagiarism accusation. With less than two months before its release, "Solo: A Star Wars Story" will likely be remembered more for the trouble surrounding it than for the film's quality. The spin-off following a young Han Solo keeps stumbling.
Less than a month ago Disney released the first official trailer for the film and with a late trailer came news of the problems this movie about a young Han Solo has brought. The first misstep was the departure of directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, at a time when the film was already well underway. Ron Howard stepped in as director, taking on a hard task. Rumors suggested problems between Alden Ehrenreich and the directing duo's improvisational style, and it was even said that a coach was hired for the actor who will play Han Solo.
Along with the Super Bowl trailer, Disney also released some very nice and colorful posters with a vintage tone. Less than a month after those posters came to light, Hachim Bahous, a French designer and illustrator, accused Disney of plagiarism. Bahous had created several covers for a CD collection called "Legacy Recordings", a compilation featuring various styles including Soul, Jazz, Rock, Funk, Hip-Hop, among others, under Sony Music France.
The resemblance is alarming not only in typography but also in color and tones. The complaint came from the illustrator's own Facebook page, where he expressed his outrage at Disney's "work":
"I feel flattered that the quality of my work is recognized, but it still is pure and simple plagiarism. They have not asked me for permission; I want them to credit me and pay for this work I did for Sony."
One possibility is that Disney reached an agreement with Sony that Bahous was unaware of, though it is all still premature and Disney has not issued any statement.
