Doom. The game that made history. The history that became the “Hello World”. From hacked Nintendo consoles to pregnancy tests, there is no platform that can resist it. However, Doom also serves as inspiration for other projects, and one of them is Doom Captcha. The name says it all: To pass the Captcha, you have to annihilate four Imps. Its creator warns us not to take the project too seriously... but it is Doom.

Doom Captcha

I'll begin with a not entirely popular opinion: Doom Eternal is inferior to Doom 2016. Personally, I feel that the creative, aesthetic, gameplay, and lore decisions fell short of the previous game. Of course, if we limit ourselves to appreciating the Doomslayer's carnage, Eternal has quality and quantity... but it could have been better.

Obviously, the story is far from over. Sooner or later, the Doomslayer will continue his endless crusade, and the same happens with the fans of the franchise, who keep adapting and modifying the original games in different ways. However, today we came across Doom Captcha, a project by Miquel Camps Orteza. What does it do? Let's see...

Doom Captcha: Trading Traffic Lights for Imps

You can change the number of Imps by modifying its code

We hate the Captcha, no doubt about it. Traffic lights, bicycles, buses, click-click-click. But Doom Captcha changes traffic lights for Imps, and you must kill four before time runs out. It's the same mechanism, but much more satisfying. Doom Captcha also includes original sounds, and a sample of E1M1 as soundtrack.

Miquel took the trouble to introduce a small easter egg in Doom Captcha, and it's none other than the eternal IDDQD (code for God Mode in classic games), although I couldn't get it to work entirely. The Doom Captcha code allows us to disable sound and time limit, or increase the number of enemies (maximum 11).

Doom Captcha reached number 1 on Product Hunt, not bad considering it was prepared in just a weekend. However, Miquel warns that we shouldn't take it too seriously, and that anyone can break the security of this captcha without much difficulty. Still, I'll keep his main phrase: “Captchas don't have to be boring”, and I definitely prefer blasting Imps to clicking on a couple of traffic lights.
