Alex Garland, the acclaimed screenwriter behind 28 Days Later and Sunshine, presents his directorial debut with Ex Machina, a chilling vision of a not-too-distant future that stars a seductive artificial intelligence. Meet Ava, the beautiful artificial intelligence, in the new trailer for Ex Machina.
We've already told you the story of Ex Machina, but in case you haven't heard, here's a brief rundown: Caleb is a young programmer who participates in an experiment alongside his boss Nathan. Together they begin testing a new, completely humanoid artificial intelligence named Ava. But everything gets out of control as feelings within the group start to surface as the days go by, giving rise to a love triangle where loyalty between man and machine begins to be questioned.
A Nod to La Eva Futura
The plot of Ex Machina can easily be compared to the work of writer Auguste Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, La Eva Futura, one of the first novels to popularize the term "android". And Ava shares many of the characteristics of that novel, being a highly sophisticated artificial and emotional intelligence housed in the beautiful body of a young robot, which will be the source of seduction (and the cause of problems) between the two coworkers.
Cast and Release
The main cast is made up of Domhnall Gleeson (Caleb), Alicia Vikander (Ava), Oscar Isaac (Nathan), and Sonoya Mizuno (Kyoko). The film is written by Alex Garland (Dredd) and marks his directorial debut. Ex Machina was released in late January in the UK, receiving a good reception both for its intelligent plot and for Garland's future as a director. For now, the film is expected to be released on April 10, 2015, in the United States.
