Considering the enormous visual impact of social media and the extreme short-termism of what is published there, artist and designer Matthias Winckelmann decided to explore that dynamic by creating Rachael, the first autonomous 3D designer on Instagram.
Is it possible to automate beauty? The first reaction would be to say no, but the truth is that many people out there are trying it, posting photos and videos several times a day on social media. It doesn't matter if they're seeking the famous "dopamine shock" or expanding their online business: the bombardment is constant, or rather, it needs to be. Like the "spice", likes must flow.
This is how we discovered artist and designer Matthias Winckelmann, who created Rachael, the first 3D designer influencer that posts her creations on Instagram autonomously. Built with Unreal Engine 4, her goal is to produce images that are "agreeable and popular" on the social network. She posts one image daily, and will continue doing so as long as her computer remains online, but the experiment raises an interesting question: as artificial intelligence and machine learning advance, what is the risk that a 3D designer becomes obsolete?
