How to Use FTP to Access Google Drive

With a Google Drive adapter, you can use Google's service as a server that you can access from an FTP client to upload and download files. The adapter is called google-drive-ftp-adapter and from it you will access your Google Drive account through an FTP client (being able to read and write files, just like you do with other FTP servers).

google-drive-ftp-adapter is a free, open-source Java-based program that runs in the background and takes FTP credentials from any server (including your Google Drive account) to later access the server's contents (in our case, Google Drive) via an FTP client.

Use Google Drive as an FTP Server

The first thing you need to do is download the JAR file (you need Java installed on your computer). Then run the adapter by double-clicking its icon. It runs from the command prompt.

When the installation finishes, your default web browser will prompt you to log in to your Google account. After successful verification, the browser tab will close.

After this, Google Drive will be ready to use as an FTP server. At this point you will need to use an FTP client; in this test we used FileZilla (but you can use any).

The connection to Google Drive is quite fast. The FTP client will list all files and folders in your Google Drive profile. From the FTP connection you can perform the following actions: Drag and drop files, right-click on folders and files, click to rename, delete, or move them, etc.

We have only tested on Windows, but the adapter's developers claim that this service works on other operating systems. If you need to access Google Drive from an FTP for one-way file transfer, this tutorial will provide all the tools to do this task in a few simple steps.
