The DC Universe has experienced many significant changes in recent years. Just thinking about the last Joker that Warner Bros presented with Jared Leto, which was an absolute disappointment. It's clear that everything reinvents itself. A standalone film about Arthur Fleck, without depending on Batman and telling his origin, is a more than interesting proposal. What the Teaser Shows
Last night, at a new edition of CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the first teaser of Joker was officially presented, directed by Todd Phillips (Hangover, Project X). The trailer, which was later uploaded to the web, takes us to the 80s, with an Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) who has not yet transformed into the Joker, the mythical killer and enemy of Batman. Many sequences show some of the traumas and transformations the character undergoes: becoming a clown, being attacked and beaten on several occasions, visiting Arkham psychiatric hospital, and always showing that sadistic laugh, wondering if the world has gone mad. You can also see a cameo of Thomas Wayne on television.
The truth is that after watching this trailer, we notice that it is more of a montage than a preview of the plot. And this is not negative at all, since we are used to trailers that tell us 70% of the story. This teaser leaves us with a feeling that something powerful and horrible will happen, especially when Arthur appears at the end descending some stairs in a red suit. The director of the film, Todd Phillips, explains that he does not want to spoil anything about the plot and that everything should be a surprise. He also clarified that he does not yet have a defined origin and that the character is still being shaped.
The fact that Joker does not have his mythical enemy on the other side is also a precedent. This spin-off will have no relation to the DC Universe and its budget will be among the lowest in this genre, with around 55 million dollars.
Within the cast we have the great Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Zazie Beets, Bill Camp, Marc Maron, and of course Joaquin Phoenix in the role of the Joker. The movie will be presented on October 4, and we'll see if at that time Phillips will reveal something about the plot.
