The best part of any car race is when the camera goes inside one of the vehicles. I know I'm not alone here: the driver's perspective, the distances, the risks, the sound of the engine… it's a different experience. Now, there are many racing simulators out there, and using a virtual headset only makes things better, but if you need the roar of an engine exploding in your ears right now, Engine Sound Simulator by Mark Oosting has exactly what you're looking for.
Grand Prix, 1966. Probably the best car racing movie of all time. It won three Oscars, two of them related to sound (Best Sound and Best Sound Effects). Honestly, I think the debate ended once the engines exploded during its opening. And that's what brings us here today: the roar of a high-performance engine. It might not be a Formula 1, but it's a pretty convincing simulation, courtesy of Mark Oosting on GitHub.
Engine Sound Simulator: Simulating the Sound of an Engine
The simulation takes a while to load (although my internet connection has been miserable lately). There are also three sound presets to explore, but the default option is more than enough. The spacebar is the accelerator, the arrow keys change the speed (six in total), and the letter B is the brake. No need to worry, since the engine won't blow up if we miss a gear change, but the natural "limit" is around 8,700 revolutions.
And that's it! No graphics, no curves, no physics. The simulator experience is strictly acoustic. Judging by the information available on GitHub, this has been online for over a year, but anyone can access its code and samples. Links below!
