It's not a desirable situation. In fact, it doesn't even cross our minds. However, sooner or later any computer can exhibit this characteristic sign of rebellion and crisis.The spontaneous restart of the computer is a traumatic event, and many users panic at the loss of stability.If your PC restarts on its own and you don't know where to start, don't despair. Today we're going to explore the main causes of this behavior.
Energy
One of the most important factors, and at the same time, the most ignored by users.Always you must verify that the power supply for any computer is optimal, but this is not limited to ATX power supplies: it also extends to cables and power outlets. In two decades of experience, I've seen all kinds of cut, bitten, pinched, stepped-on, torn, melted, and perforated cables.
At the same time, in the absence of outlets, many users connect poor-quality adapters that inevitably end up in false contacts… or something worse. The "lifeline" for your computer must be stable and of quality: Good ATX power supply, thick cables, voltage stability or protector, and a robust outlet with clean power.
RAM Memory
Generally, a memory failure causes hard hangs, the complete freezing of the computer. However, some modules can experience failures subtle enough to trigger a restart. In the case of a faulty RAM memory, there are two ways to evaluate: Inside and outside Windows.
If you prefer to test RAM within the operating system, one of the best resources is HCI MemTest, with which we can create multiple instances and exert great pressure. In contrast, memory diagnosis outside Windows should be left to MemTest86+, recently updated to version 6.00.
Needless to say, it's recommended to disable any attempt at overclocking if the memory is not stable.
Heat
Ah, a deadly enemy if we have one. Any computer needs to dissipate heat in some way, but if things get too hot, components receive a one-way ticket to the island of instability. In more extreme cases, the hardware tries to protect itself with the function of "thermal shutdown", an emergency shutdown linked to thermal issues.
As for the solution, you know it very well: Basic tools, time, and space. It's also likely that the processor and graphics card need a thermal paste change. The process will leave the computer offline for a couple of hours, and this is frustrating for many users (that's why cleaning is postponed so much)... but hangs are worse.
Software
If your PC restarts on its own due to a software issue, three things come to mind: A malware infection, a stability issue related to a driver, or a recent hotfix from Windows Update.
In general, it's rare for malware to restart the computer frequently, unless it's some ransomware intended to encrypt your files. In that case, we are facing a completely different challenge, which this guide does not cover.
On the other hand, restarts associated with unstable drivers have been documented to no end. From mysterious errors to blue screens, the latest version of a driver is not always the best for all computers. Rolling back to a previous driver build is not that complicated, but if we're talking about a graphics card, I recommend using Display Driver Uninstaller to remove any trace.
Finally... Windows Update. Microsoft's record of defective hotfixes keeps getting worse day by day, and the second Tuesday of each month has become a nightmare for all of us. If you notice that restarts are more frequent after a round of updates, it's not a bad idea to undo that installation. No one using Windows 10 or Windows 11 is immune to this, and if there are errors in a patch, it can definitely wait until Redmond does its job.
The Reset Button?
It sounds ridiculous... but there are several precedents. Basically, the buttons used by some computer cases don't exactly have dazzling quality, and are very susceptible to things like humidity and corrosion. If we add a pinch of bad luck, the reset button will start sending "ghost presses", restarting the computer without warning.
Fortunately, this is easy to fix: You can try to clean the switch, replace it entirely (generic models are usually quite inexpensive) or as an alternative, disconnect its cable and leave the computer without a reset. The button is useful, but not mandatory.
In Summary
