Yes, the dialogue of NPCs in modern games is pretty terrible. No, you don't need much effort to notice their limitations. And no, there's nothing we can do about it… unless we resort to installing endless mods. But the team at Replica Studios wants to put an end to generic NPCs using pure artificial intelligence and generative voices with their Smart NPCs plugin. The technical demo is based on The Matrix Awakens project for Unreal Engine 5, and some of the dialogue is truly something else…

How many guards abandoned their adventurous lives after an arrow to the knee? How many sweet rolls were stolen? How many settlements needed our help? While Bethesda isn't the only company that used horrible dialogue for its generic NPCs, one thing is certain: those lines are burned into our minds.

But beyond the memes and parodies, deep down we feel that poor-quality NPCs must come to an end. The problem is obvious: increasing dialogue complexity means time and money that developers can't (or won't) invest. That's where Replica Studios steps in with the new Smart NPCs plugin. Their goal is to offer a solution based on artificial intelligence and generative voices to revolutionize NPC creation, and for their technical demo they chose the perfect place: The Matrix.

Smart NPCs: Dynamic real-time dialogue for NPCs with artificial intelligence

The videos from Trevor Martin and Ziggy The Adventurer on YouTube (both below) have everything you need to know if for some reason you can't download the 26.7 GB demo, or don't have the minimum hardware. The A button on the gamepad or the C key activates the microphone, letting you talk directly with the NPCs in an attempt to convey the truth: they're trapped in the Matrix, prisoners of a perverse system.

To be honest, we can actually talk about anything with the NPCs, but the craziest dialogue happens when we explain that they don't exist and are part of a simulation. Ziggy's demo suggests that it's not possible to convince NPCs 100 percent to escape the Matrix, but Replica confirmed that the technical demo will receive updates in the future. Finally, anyone interested in accessing the Unreal Engine-compatible plugin will need to join the waiting list. Link below!
