To mark the recent 25th anniversary of its release, and as a Christmas gift, a hacker has added color to the best Super Mario game for Game Boy. You can now play Super Mario Land 2 in color and for free.
A Game Boy classic in a new light
Released in 1992 for the Game Boy and later adapted for the Nintendo 3DS, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins introduced us to Mario Land, where Mario's castle is now usurped by his old childhood friend, Wario. Taking advantage of the recent 25th anniversary, it's the perfect time to enjoy this classic with a feature it never had: color.
The person behind this project is the hacker toruzz, who named this stylish and colorful version Super Mario Land 2 DX. In addition to color, the game lets you play as Luigi (with different physics) and eliminates lag, which worked against the original when there was a lot of movement on screen. For those unaware, Super Mario Land 2 is considered one of the best Game Boy titles, standing out for its visual effects for a handheld and for short play sessions. Nintendo never released an official color version of this game, not even in its 2011 adaptation for Nintendo 3DS.
The legacy behind the hack
Unlike other games in the series, Super Mario Land 2 was created by Hiroji Kiyotake instead of Shigeru Miyamoto. This sequel marks the debut of Wario, who would later become the protagonist of his own spin-off series. Super Mario Land 2 DX is a project by toruzz and is available for free download. Note that you'll need the original game ROM to play this version.
