One of the most effective ways that literature and film masters have to churn our stomachs is to use monsters with certain human characteristics, while they remain halfway between. From Frankenstein and The Island of Doctor Moreau to the Xenomorph and the Yautja, that concept has been adapted and reinvented tirelessly, but some artists manage to give it a more “tangible” form. Laira Maganuco achieved that goal with her series of pigs, rodents, lizards, and ticks with human skin and faces... pulled from our worst nightmares.
The description of her Instagram account says it all: “I like horrifying things and hybrid creatures. And you?” The rest is a festival of monsters, deformed fetuses, mutant plants with human skin, pig-children, consumed old men, and the occasional reference to Dobby from Harry Potter. Her work also reminds me of the dog with a human face in the 1978 adaptation of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
