The Marvel Cinematic Universe opened its so-called “Phase 4” with the release of WandaVision, but fans have already started building hype for the next big Disney Plus production, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan return to form one of the most anticipated teams on television, with old and new villains, classic allies, and a chemistry that promises to blow up streaming.
Phase 3 of the MCU concluded with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019. It was expected that Phase 4 would begin with Black Widow, but for reasons well known to the public, its release was “recalibrated” to May of this year. Something similar happened with the productions destined for Disney Plus. WandaVision received several adjustments (becoming the “official” opener of Phase 4) until its January premiere, but that seemingly didn’t affect its good reception.
Next on the list is none other than The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Originally scheduled for August 2020 (three months after the original Black Widow date), it now has its sights set on March 19. With a first season of only six episodes (each lasting between 40 and 50 minutes), fans have exploded with enthusiasm, and the series has managed to surpass The Mandalorian in searches and trend records, which is no small feat. What can we expect from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? The latest trailer has the answer:
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: “How much does the Captain’s shield weigh?”
Fortunately, the series has no major changes in its cast: Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan return to assume their roles as Sam Wilson / Falcon and Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier, who will cross paths again with Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl), the villain who nearly destroyed the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War. As an extra kick, the relationship between Falcon and Winter Soldier is quite tense at times, and the presence of Captain America is undeniable. The trailer suggests that the process for Sam goes far beyond “accepting the mantle” of Steve Rogers, and it will be very interesting to see how the series explores that point of conflict.
The trailer confirms the return of Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and then we find details in the cast such as Wyatt Russell in the role of U.S. Agent / John F. Walker, Georges St-Pierre, who played Georges Batroc in The Winter Soldier (with a very good fight and an explosive escape), Don Cheadle, whom we will see as Rhodey once again, and the young Erin Kellyman, taking on the role of Karli Morgenthau, a member of the group known as the Flag Smashers. Kellyman caught the public’s attention in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and will also be part of the TV adaptation of Willow.
In summary
Time to set the alert: March 19, Disney Plus. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier versus anarchist groups, and much more. Six episodes, with the potential to add several additional seasons if the audience gives its blessing (which will probably happen). And this is just the beginning. Disney has almost a dozen series in the oven, led by the most charismatic villain of recent decades, who honestly needs no introduction. By the way, he arrives in June.
