Much of the history of radio is tied to Guglielmo Marconi and his wireless inventions, but a YouTube channel called “Railways | Retro Tech | DIY” takes us into a different part of the story. Instead of wireless development, it explores the Soviet Union’s “wired radio.” Millions of “radios” behind the Iron Curtain were nothing more than simple speakers connected to a special network, receiving news from Moscow without interference or extra hardware.
Some regions have already started to replace or retire traditional radio frequencies, but others remain as strong as ever. Despite the rise of streaming, there’s still a certain charm in tuning into a station and discovering what’s on the “airwaves”. Now, imagine a radio without a dial, without a band selector, and without an antenna. Just a box with a speaker, and a connector very similar to a generic Europlug. In fact, “Railways | Retro Tech | DIY” on YouTube took one of these “radios”, connected it to its electrical network, and all it could hear was the 50 Hz hum from the line. So, is it damaged, or is there something else going on?
Meet the Soviet Union’s Wired Radio
When you open the device, one of the first things that strikes you is its simplicity: besides the cable and the connector, inside there’s a transformer, a potentiometer for volume, and a speaker. In reality, this “radio” isn’t connected to the normal 220-240V line, but to a small special outlet, usually installed in the kitchens of millions of Soviet homes. The audio signal was distributed through a “Red Radial” with an amplitude of 30 volts. That signal passed through the transformer in the “radio” and was emitted by the speaker.
The creation of the “Red Radial” dates back to the 1920s. The leaders of a very young Soviet Union quickly recognized the potential of unilateral, constant communication in homes across the country, but importing radios wasn’t economically viable, and there was always the risk of exposure to “enemy propaganda”. The Red Radial solved both issues by manufacturing very simple devices (three components plus casing, cable, and plug), and total control over the content that came through the cable.
By the 1940s, there were approximately six million wired radios, while conventional radios didn’t exceed half a million. With the onset of World War II, these radios were requisitioned, and the wired units continued official broadcasts. After the war, installing connections for the Red Radial became mandatory in all new constructions.
To finish, some technical details. In essence, the Red Radial was a national-scale “intercom” with multiple regional stations. The video explains that Moscow’s transmission was sent to these stations using telephone wires. Once received, a 960-volt signal was generated for distribution. Smaller stations reduced the voltage to 240 volts, and sent the signal to residential blocks. At the end of each line, an 8:1 transformer converted the 240 volts to 30 for the speakers.
Even though it’s just a speaker, I admit I’d love to have one to turn into Bluetooth or something like that.
