Igalia contributes to browser-engine work associated with Chrome and Safari, with a historical example showing how work across engines can still lead to different implementation choices. A profile published Oct. 25, 2026, describes the A Coruña consultancy’s browser work; a separate account by Frederic Wang details projects from the second half of 2018.
What Igalia contributes to browsers
A browser engine is the software that handles a web page’s content and presentation. A 2026 profile describes Igalia as contributing to engines used by Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Brave and Opera. The historical examples name Chromium, the project associated with Chrome, and WebKit, the engine associated with Safari.
A 2018 example from Chromium and WebKit
In a retrospective on Igalia’s work in the second half of 2018, Frederic Wang described CSS Grid fixes in Chromium and WebKit, along with work on Web Platform Tests. CSS Grid is a system for arranging page content in rows and columns; the fixes and tests addressed how that feature worked across the two engine projects.
The same account describes a list-formatting change that landed in Chromium but was not implemented in Safari. After discussion with Apple, the change was not adopted because it could break some rich-text editor apps on iOS. The example shows how a browser-engine change can involve a compatibility tradeoff for apps on a particular platform, even when the work concerns shared web standards.
How Igalia’s open-source consulting works
Igalia’s co-founder Alberto García described a model in which clients pay the company to adapt open-source software for their products, fix problems or add features. The resulting improvements can then be used by others. In this arrangement, a client funds engineering work on software that remains useful beyond that client’s own product.
Orca, Valve and the company behind the work
The 2026 profile also says Igalia maintains Orca, a screen reader for Linux users with visual disabilities, and works with Valve on operating systems, graphics, audio and video for gaming devices including Steam Deck.
The profile says ten graduates of Universidade da Coruña founded Igalia in September 2001. It reported nearly 200 professionals across three continents on Oct. 25, 2026. García also described a worker-partner model in which employees can take part in decisions about the company’s work, investments and salaries through voting and consensus.
