The latest films and series haven't given us many reasons to extend our commitment to the Cinematic Universe, but the story of Marvel is very different if we look closely at its most recent video games. On one hand, the Marvel's Spider-Man series was very well received, and on the other, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy made a huge leap in quality compared to Marvel's Avengers. The best part? Checkered flag and finish for one of the best rounds of free games shared by the Epic Games Store. Beyond some low points, personally I must admit that I have really enjoyed these titles. Cursed to Golf offers a solid challenge, Human Resource Machine melts brains in its higher levels, and A Plague Tale: Innocence (yesterday's game) presents an excellent story that will probably become a series very soon. However, Epic decided to save its strongest cannon for last: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Don't be fooled by the title, this one is worth it...
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: They are the Guardians, you are the hero
Unlike its predecessor, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy focuses completely on providing a single-player experience, without secondary services or anything like that. The only element that repeats (to a certain extent) is the concept of origin story: Guardians of the Galaxy narrates Peter Quill's first and tragic encounter with extraterrestrial forces (in the form of interactive flashbacks), and then moves the timeline to show a recently formed group of Guardians, trying to impress a powerful client with the capture of a monster.
Obviously, things don't go as Star-Lord and his team had planned. The wounds of the Galactic War (which pitted Thanos and the Chitauri against the Kree and the Resistance) are still very open, but they also have to deal with the threat of the Universal Church of Truth, which seems to have abandoned its famous "Golden God", Adam Warlock...
... and that's enough spoilers. In short, the story is excellent, and I dare say it surpasses the most recent MCU on several levels. In fact, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy won the Best Narrative award at "The Game Awards 2021", and at least half a dozen more recognitions highlighting its plot and soundtrack.
Ready to install it? In that case, I must add two details before finishing: The first is that it needs just over 80 gigabytes of space, and the second is that you have time to get a copy: The 24-hour limit has disappeared, and it will remain as a free game until next January 10. Enjoy!
