As the year enters stoppage time, it's a good moment to review what was most watched and listened to on YouTube. Naturally, that information comes through the classic YouTube Rewind, which this year features more than 200 artists, actors, YouTubers, and other celebrities. Some videos definitely deserve a spot in the Top 10, while others remind us that there's no accounting for taste.

YouTube Rewind 2016

Hard as it is to believe, we're already at that time of year. Many of our readers have probably concluded that 2016 showed no mercy. It hit us hard (and very early) with the loss of David Bowie and Alan Rickman, but it didn't just sit back. Obviously, there are good things to highlight, and YouTube does its best to present them in this little celebration we've grown accustomed to watching in early December. First, let's go with the video. Can you recognize anyone in it?

Well, let's say The Rock needs no introduction, but a trained eye will probably spot Dan and Phil, el Rubius, Germán and PewDiePie, along with other references like the hydraulic press, Pokémon GO, and the legendary Scott Sterling (who could stop an asteroid with his face). There are more than 200 artists packed into a video that stays just under seven minutes. Now, what was the most viewed of the year? Logically, that depends on the category. YouTube's official blog published the full list (link below), but we'll mention a few here. The “original content” section racked up more than 550 million views, which equals about 25 million hours of video. Third place went to the video exploring what’s inside a rattlesnake’s rattle, second goes to something called “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” (personally, it's absolutely horrible), and number one belongs to a video I really enjoyed: James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” with Adele.

The Music Charts

As for music, the podium opens with Nicky Jam and his song Hasta el Amanecer, which has almost 900 million views. Number two is This Is What You Came For by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna (1.032 billion hits), and at the top is Work From Home by Fifth Harmony. Honestly, I don't know what the new generations see in songs like these, but if they put them at the top, there must be a reason.
