The official PC update for 007 First Light added path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction on September 15, 2026. It makes light bounce, reflections, shadows and material response more convincing, but the performance bill can be hefty: one test using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 reached just 20–28 FPS at 4K with path tracing enabled and an unofficial DLSS 5 mod.
What changes in the image
Path tracing calculates how light travels and bounces through a scene rather than relying only on precomputed or simplified lighting. In 007 First Light, that difference is most obvious on glossy vehicles, polished surfaces, wood, vegetation and interiors. Reflections pick up surrounding light more naturally, while indirect illumination gives rooms and outdoor areas a more coherent relationship between bright and shaded parts.
NVIDIA pairs the feature with DLSS Ray Reconstruction, which is designed to improve the clarity and fidelity of the reconstructed ray-traced effects. The visual upgrade is not a blanket makeover of every pixel, but it is easy to spot in scenes built around reflective materials, strong light sources and dark interiors.
The cost: a 4K test with an RTX 5080
The visual improvement comes with a serious performance trade-off. In a test system equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 memory and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080, path tracing produced 20–28 FPS at 4K in DLSS Performance Mode.
That result used an unofficial DLSS 5 mod injected through the DLSS eXtended Loader, so it is not a measure of native DLSS 5 support in the game. It is also a result from one specific system and configuration, not a universal frame-rate promise for every RTX 5080.
The same test reached a minimum of 40 FPS only after switching to 1080p with DLSS Quality or using a 50% render scale at 1440p. In practical terms, 4K path tracing may require a substantial resolution compromise even on high-end hardware.
Official path tracing and modded DLSS 5 are different things
The path-tracing update and DLSS Ray Reconstruction are official features of the PC version. DLSS 5 was not native to the game in the cited performance test; it was added through a mod. Keeping that distinction clear matters, because the 20–28 FPS result combines the official lighting feature with an unofficial upscaling configuration.
NVIDIA’s published recommendation is scoped to GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop GPUs with DLSS Ray Reconstruction. The recommendation does not, by itself, turn the RTX 5080 test into a performance target for every system in that family.
How to enable path tracing
On Windows PC, install the game update and the latest graphics driver, then open the graphics settings and enable Path Tracing. IO Interactive says the option is hidden when the computer does not meet the minimum hardware requirements.
That makes the decision fairly straightforward: if you have the required hardware and value more accurate reflections, indirect light and material response, try the feature and watch your frame rate. If 4K smoothness matters more, the cited test shows why lowering resolution or render scale may be necessary.
