Apple lists AirPods 5 at $129 in the United States and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149. Both configurations include active noise cancellation (ANC), but their published battery ratings differ: up to four hours per charge for the standard model and up to five hours for the Wireless Charging Case version. What changes between the two AirPods 5 configurations
The two versions share an open-ear design, Apple’s H2 chip and the same ANC feature set. The extra $20 buys a more capable case, additional controls and a higher published ANC battery rating.

The $149 model makes sense if you already use wireless charging or want a speaker in the case to help locate it with Find My. Its stem swipe also lets you adjust the volume directly. The standard model delivers the same open-ear format, H2 chip and ANC for $20 less.
Both versions include Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, dual beamforming microphones and Voice Isolation. Neither includes a USB-C charging cable or power adapter.
The one-hour battery difference
Apple’s figures are configuration-specific: the standard AirPods 5 provide up to four hours of listening with ANC per charge, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case provide up to five hours. Apple lists up to 22 hours of ANC listening with the premium case.
The listed earbuds share reported dimensions of 30.2 × 18.3 × 18.1 mm, a reported weight of 4.3 g and the H2 chip, yet the ANC ratings differ. The five-hour figure therefore applies to the Wireless Charging Case configuration, not automatically to the $129 model.
Apple does not list a separate conversation-time figure for AirPods 5. The ANC listening ratings are the clearest published battery figures for comparing the two configurations.
What open-ear ANC feels like in practice
AirPods 5 keep an open-ear design while adding ANC to both versions. Apple says they deliver up to 1.5× the noise reduction of AirPods 4 with ANC, also describing the claim as up to 50% more noise reduction. That is Apple’s performance claim rather than an independent measurement.
Hands-on reviews found the ANC unusually effective for open earbuds, while fit varied with ear shape and activity. Some reviewers reported discomfort or reduced security during vigorous movement. The open design also remains less isolating than sealed in-ear earbuds with silicone tips, so the choice is as much about comfort and awareness as it is about noise reduction.
Apple lists redesigned multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Features such as Live Translation and Siri AI depend on compatible hardware, software, firmware, language and region.
AirPods 5 versus AirPods 4 with ANC
AirPods 5 start at $129 in the U.S. and include ANC. AirPods 4 with ANC launched at $179.

The standard AirPods 5 launched $50 below the AirPods 4 with ANC. Apple’s noise-reduction claim gives the newer model a paper advantage, but the percentage does not predict identical results for every listener or environment.
AppleCare coverage and the published service fee
AppleCare One Individual starts at $19.99 per month for up to three eligible products. Apple also lists a $29 accidental-damage service fee for covered headphones. That fee is separate from the monthly plan price.
Apple says headphones covered by AppleCare receive battery service at no extra charge when their capacity falls below 80%. That coverage matters for long-term ownership, particularly when the product’s published rating is four or five hours with ANC.
U.S. price and availability
