Uncomfortable seats, fights over reclining your seat, children jumping and screaming, terrible food, and the WiFi that doesn't work – for many, flying has become a torture. But it wasn't always like that. After World War II, much of the aviation industry returned to commercial service, launching new aircraft that aimed to prioritize passenger comfort. One of them was the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, which made its first flight in 1947. With room for up to 114 people (maximum), the Stratocruiser was a kind of hotel in the air, yet it had a relatively short life...
Luxury in the Air
Separate bathrooms and dressing rooms for men and women. A lounge on the lower level to relax and have a drink. Beds that guarantee passenger privacy. Fine china and fresh food. Compared with today's commercial airline offerings, all of this sounds like science fiction, but there was a time when flying wasn't a nightmare – quite the opposite. The Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was one of the many aircraft that symbolized that era of luxury and space in the air.
One of the most advanced aircraft of its debut, the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was among the first to introduce the concept of a pressurized cabin for commercial flights (the first was its younger sibling, the 307 Stratoliner), and its maximum configuration allowed the transport of 114 passengers – 100 on the upper deck and 14 in the lounge.
A Short and Costly Career
However, the Stratocruiser's operational record was relatively poor. It was very expensive for airlines, and catastrophic mechanical failures in engines and propellers became recurrent. The losses amounted to eleven fuselages between 1947 (the year its prototype flew) and its final retirement in 1963. The combination of cost, technical problems, and the impressive advance of jets ended the Stratocruiser's career.
