After the release of Godzilla in 2014, the Japanese company Toho is preparing to launch its own reboot of the mutant dinosaur. Enjoy the Japanese reboot with the trailer for Godzilla Resurgence.
Twelve years have passed since the release of Godzilla: Final Wars, a Japanese film that concluded the Millennium era of our favorite mutant dinosaur. But not one to be idle, Toho set to work on its own reboot of the franchise to compete with the success that Legendary achieved with Godzilla in 2014. This Japanese reboot titled Godzilla Resurgence seems to return to the origins of the first film, released in 1954, where Godzilla has been disturbed from its natural habitat in the abyssal depths by humans and emerges to wreak havoc across all of Japan.
Full of fire and fury, as can be seen in the trailer, this new Godzilla has the appearance of hardened lava on the surface of its body with cracks exposing a red-hot interior. Toho did an excellent job with the appearance of the giant lizard, although some might accuse them of overusing CG effects (as often happens in this type of Japanese film). The Godzilla Resurgence video shows a Japan on alert, with its citizens fleeing in terror at the presence of the giant monster, while the country's parliamentary members prepare to gather military forces and fight the threat that looms over them.
Godzilla Resurgence stars Yutaka Takenouchi, Hiroki Hasegawa, and Satomi Ishihara (the latter two appeared in the film Shingeki no Kyojin). Interestingly, the film will feature 328 cameos, including several Japanese film stars such as Ren Osugi (Go), Akira Emoto (Zatōichi), Kimiko Yo (Ace Attorney), Jun Kunimura (Godzilla: Final Wars), Pierre Taki (Attack on Titan), Takumi Saito (Space Battleship Yamato), and Atsuko Maeda (a pop idol who was part of AKB48). Produced by Toho and directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi (both known for their work on the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion), Godzilla Resurgence will be released on July 29, 2016 in Japan.
