Google announced on October 15, 2026, that Gmail AI Inbox is expanding to eligible paid Google Workspace editions for US users whose language is set to US English. The Rapid Release rollout began October 12; the Scheduled Release rollout is scheduled to start October 26. Google allows up to 15 days for the feature to appear after each rollout begins. The expansion adds AI-generated task suggestions and topic summaries, while administrator controls remain broader than a simple on/off switch.
Which Workspace accounts are included, and when?
Google named eight editions for the expansion: Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, AI Pro for Education, and Frontline Plus. The rollout notice applies to US users with their language set to US English.
Rapid Release domains began receiving the feature on October 12. Scheduled Release domains are set to begin on October 26, with visibility taking up to 15 days. That gradual schedule means the start date is not a guarantee that every eligible inbox will show AI Inbox that day.
Google’s current Gmail Help page also lists personal Google accounts with Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra plans, as well as eligible work or school accounts. It says AI Inbox is currently available only in the US and in English.
What AI Inbox reads and displays
AI Inbox has two sections: Suggested to-dos surfaces high-priority items from email and the actions they call for, sometimes with a due date; Topics to catch up on summarizes important updates across projects and topics.
Google says the feature uses messages in Gmail’s Primary tab. It excludes other tabs such as Social and Promotions, as well as spam and messages that users archive, delete, mute, or snooze. Attachments, delegated inboxes, and encrypted email are not supported.
Some suggested to-dos or topic updates may be generated and used to improve the experience without appearing in the AI Inbox panel. In Gmail on the web, “View all” opens the full set of suggested to-dos and topics. AI Inbox also requires both Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products to be enabled. Google says the first suggestions may take up to seven days to appear after those settings are enabled.
What users and administrators can control
Users can hide or show the AI Inbox panel in Gmail’s Inbox settings. That changes whether the panel appears; Google’s feature documentation does not describe it as a way to stop the underlying processing.
Google’s rollout notice says there is no administrator control for AI Inbox as a standalone feature. Administrators of supported Workspace editions can instead turn Gmail off as a source for Workspace Intelligence, Google’s system for Workspace generative AI features. Google says that change may remove users’ access to AI Inbox and can take up to 48 hours to take effect. It is a broader source-level setting, and its effect on AI Inbox is not guaranteed.
AI Inbox’s feature-specific requirements and display options are explained in Google’s Gmail Help. Administrators can read about the Gmail source control for Workspace Intelligence.
