LibertyRecompAndroid is an unofficial port that runs a recompiled Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV natively on arm64 Android. The project’s releases page listed version 0.5.9.3 as its latest stable release on October 19, 2026; the project requires your own Xbox 360 game image and Title Update 8 because it does not include game assets. What changed in version 0.5.9.3

Released October 14, 2026, version 0.5.9.3 fixes audio stutter in the normal Android audio mode, restores 720p output after a resolution issue in 0.5.9.2, and adds experimental startup on Mali GPUs. The release notes still warn that audio may stutter on Mali, and describe Mali performance as slow. The project’s stated Mali test used a Pixel 7 with a Mali-G710 GPU.

The port builds on Liberty Recompiled, a static recompilation of the Xbox 360 version. The project describes its Android build as native arm64 execution, rather than Xbox 360 emulation. That distinction does not remove the need for the original game files.

Hardware and game files

The project recommends a 64-bit Android device running Android 10 or later, with an arm64 processor meeting ARMv8.2-A, a Snapdragon 865-class chip or faster, and 8 GB of RAM. It recommends Qualcomm Adreno 6xx or 7xx GPUs. Adreno 8xx support is experimental; Mali support is very early and not supported by the developer. The project lists Samsung Xclipse, PowerVR and Huawei Maleoon GPUs as unsupported. It recommends Mesa Turnip for Adreno; using a device’s own Vulkan driver requires Vulkan 1.2.

The project specifies an Xbox 360 GTA IV ISO and Title Update 8. Its verified combination is the USA NTSC-U game image with update version 0.0.8.5; it rejects the PAL update, version 0.0.8.6. The game takes about 7 GB once installed, and the project recommends about 15 GB of free space during installation.

Installing the port

The documented setup follows this order:

  1. Install the APK from the project’s releases page.
  2. Open the launcher and select the .iso game image and Title Update 8.
  3. Choose Install and wait for the game installation to finish.
  4. Choose Play in the launcher.

Selecting files stored outside the app’s folder requires one-time “All files access” permission. The project also describes using its app install folder as an alternative.

What the performance figures measure

The project’s reference device is a Retroid Pocket 5 with a Snapdragon 865 and Adreno 650. The project reports console-native 720p output, FXAA and a 30 FPS cap on that device. In its heaviest distant views, it reports roughly 25–29 FPS.

Release 0.5.9 compares GPU frame-recording time on that same handheld with version 0.5.8.1. These times measure GPU frame recording, not total frame time.

Retroid Pocket 5 sceneVersion 0.5.8.1Version 0.5.9
Starting save point, GPU frame-recording timeAbout 10 msAbout 7.4 ms
Heavy scene under the bridge, GPU frame-recording timeAbout 33 msAbout 28.5 ms

For the heavy scene, the release notes report 28.5–29.3 FPS on version 0.5.9 and describe the scene as still CPU-limited. These are project-reported results for the Retroid Pocket 5, not a performance estimate for other phones.

Controls and what has been tested

GTA 4 Android port: requirements, setup and limits

The project strongly recommends an Xbox-layout XInput controller. Recent builds also offer a translucent on-screen gamepad, which the project says it has tried only on the Retroid Pocket 5.

The project reports progress through the introduction and early story missions, as well as free roaming and driving; it says saves persist between launches. Occasional crashes remain possible. A light-volume shader is skipped because it hangs the GPU under Turnip, leaving some light volumes missing.

The two episodes, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, and online multiplayer have not been tested on Android, according to the project repository.
