iPadOS 27 became available as a free update for compatible iPads in the United States on September 14, 2026. The release brings Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, new Apple Intelligence tools across Photos, Safari, Notes and Shortcuts, a more desktop-style interface, redesigned family controls and performance improvements. The catch is important: Siri AI depends on both the iPad’s chip and the user’s region.

iPadOS 27 is available now: what changes first

The headline feature is Siri AI, but the update is broader than a chatbot makeover. Siri can use personal context, understand what is on screen, take actions inside apps, answer broader knowledge questions and help with writing. Apple also adds a dedicated Siri app and support for more natural conversations.

Visual Intelligence lets you select or circle onscreen content with a finger or Apple Pencil, then ask Siri about it or take an action. In Photos, Apple adds Spatial Reframing, Extend and an enhanced Clean Up tool. Safari can organize tabs by topic and monitor a webpage for price or availability changes through Notify Me. Shortcuts can be created or refined using natural-language descriptions.

Notes, Mail, Calendar and Home also receive Apple Intelligence features. Notes can organize typed or handwritten material into formats such as agendas and study guides. Accessibility updates include richer VoiceOver image descriptions, automatic captions and translations, and an enhanced Magnifier, with availability varying by language, region and device.

Siri AI: what it does and which iPad you need

Siri AI requires an iPad mini with A17 Pro or an iPad with M1 or later. That is a higher hardware bar than iPadOS 27 itself, so installing the update does not guarantee access to every AI feature.

Apple says Siri AI is initially offered in English. Other Apple Intelligence features can have their own hardware, language, regional and usage requirements, so the feature list on one iPad is not necessarily the feature list on another.

The major regional exception: the European Union

At launch, Siri AI was unavailable on iPadOS in the European Union. Apple cited concerns related to the Digital Markets Act. That restriction affects the headline assistant features, while other Apple Intelligence tools may remain available under their own requirements.

For iPad owners in the United States, iPadOS 27 is available as a free update for compatible models. To install it, open Settings, choose General, select Software Update, and tap Download and Install. The iPad restarts when the installation finishes.

A more Mac-like interface

iPadOS 27’s interface, Files workflows and Shortcuts changes in a post-release walkthrough

iPadOS 27 pushes the tablet’s interface closer to the Mac in several practical ways. The menu bar can remain visible, and app names can appear in the status bar. Apple also refines Liquid Glass with improved contrast, more consistent refraction and a slider that moves from ultra-clear to fully tinted.

That slider matters because translucent interfaces are a taste test—and sometimes a readability test. You can make the interface clearer or add more tint instead of accepting a single visual treatment.

The update also adds smaller workflow changes, including larger widget sizes, Home Screen undo and redo controls, and new ways to manage files, Safari tabs and Shortcuts. Windowing remains a point of debate among early users, with some preferring older split-screen and Slide Over behavior.

Apple promises faster file work, but the claim is scoped

Apple says browsing and transferring files with external drives can be up to five times faster in iPadOS 27. Apple also describes faster app launches, AirDrop transfers and smoother switching between Wi‑Fi and cellular connections.

The five-times figure applies to Apple’s stated external-drive scenario. It is not a universal result for every iPad, drive, file size or connection standard. For people who regularly move large projects to an external SSD, that is one of the update’s most practical potential gains; for everyone else, the interface and app changes may be more noticeable.

Which iPads can install iPadOS 27?

Apple’s support documentation identifies these compatible families, subject to model and chip qualifications:

iPad familyiPadOS 27 compatibilityRelevant condition
iPad Pro4th generation and laterModel and chip qualifications apply
iPad Air4th generation and laterModel and chip qualifications apply
iPad9th generation and laterModel and chip qualifications apply
iPad mini6th generation and laterModel and chip qualifications apply

Five models reported as compatible with iPadOS 26 are excluded from iPadOS 27: iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), iPad (8th generation), iPad Air 3 and iPad mini 5.

That makes the compatibility check especially important for owners of older iPads. A model can be recent enough for some iPadOS features while still falling short of the hardware needed for Siri AI.

Family controls get a substantial upgrade

Apple adds Ask to Browse, Time Allowances and Schedules, expands Communication Safety to cover gore and violence, and redesigns Screen Time controls. Parents can manage app, web, schedule and content access from the updated controls.

The result is an update with two very different faces: Siri AI and the Mac-like interface target productivity, while the expanded family tools address how an iPad is used at home. The deciding question is less whether iPadOS 27 has new features than which of them your hardware and region can actually use.
