PlayStation 5 Pro: Trailer and Technical Presentation

The time for rumors and speculation is over: Sony has just unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro with an official trailer and a technical overview by Mark Cerny. With a more powerful GPU, optimized ray tracing features, and a new upscaler backed by artificial intelligence, the Japanese giant aims to correct the most important weaknesses of its console and respond to player demands… but one thing is certain: you will have to pay (and a lot) for the privilege.

The same comment repeats across gaming forums: the current generation of consoles “fell short” in terms of hardware. The evolutionary leaps in ray tracing, the greater availability of high-resolution panels, and the constant demand for a higher framerate have left current consoles in an uncomfortable situation. The virtues of upscaling and frame generation can help compensate for that deficit, but they are not magical solutions either. Players want more power, and after a long wait, Sony decided to respond: make room for the PlayStation 5 Pro.

PlayStation 5 Pro: More GPU, ray tracing, and AI upscaling

Mark Cerny, PlayStation's chief architect, explains that the PlayStation 5 Pro is built on three fundamental pillars. The first is a more powerful graphics chip, which brings 67 percent more compute units and 28 percent extra RAM speed. This translates into a 45 percent jump in performance and the ability for users to access better graphics without sacrificing framerate. Cerny adds that in 75 percent of cases, players choose Performance mode over Fidelity on the standard PS5, so his priority is clear.

The second is a series of optimizations for ray tracing, doubling (or even tripling) its performance compared to the original PS5. Finally, the third pillar is the addition of custom hardware to incorporate upscaling, with an artificial intelligence module called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Many developers are already preparing the necessary support, and Cerny's presentation places particular emphasis on titles like Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

... ouch.

All of that sounds good. So what's the problem? Actually, we can say we have 800 problems here, and 700 across the Atlantic. We also lose the vertical stand support and the optical drive.

Available starting November 7, pre-orders begin on the 26th of this month.
