Text to Pokémon: Create New Pokémon with AI and Text
Text to Pokémon

The official Pokémon list reaches... (google it) 905 specimens, not counting the handful of new Pokémon confirmed for Generation IX that will debut with Scarlet and Violet in November. The original 151 we learned from TV songs are long gone, but if you think you can design more and better Pokémon, today you have a golden opportunity thanks to artificial intelligence. As its name suggests, Text to Pokémon gives us access to an image generator specially trained to create Pokémon using small descriptions.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet already have their three starters confirmed: Sprigatito, a grass cat that looks like an absolute favorite, Fuecoco, a fire crocodile that reminds me of the dragons of Bubble Bobble, and Quaxly, a duck with a hairstyle worthy of Elvis Presley. Now, if we take a quick look at the rest of the available Pokémon, no one can deny that some designs are quite ridiculous. In fact, they seem to be products of procedural generation... and that gives us ideas.

Image creation with artificial intelligence is on fire lately. So, why not apply it to the Pokémon universe? With that in mind we arrive at Text to Pokémon by Justin Pinkney. In essence, we are dealing with a variant of Stable Diffusion optimized for generating Pokémon characters, and it doesn't require prompt engineering: prompt – a basic description is more than enough to get started.

But the Gremlins don't have tails!
  • The "prompt" field is where you should place your description. Once again, no engineering required.
  • "num_outputs" indicates the number of images the model will create, with a maximum of 4.
  • "num_inference_steps" is the number of steps applied in the denoising process, and I recommend leaving it at 50.
  • "guidance_scale" defines how strongly the model should follow the prompt. Higher values put additional pressure on the description, but in extreme cases (17 and up) it can generate artifacts or glitching in the final image. Suggestions? To start, between 10 and 16.
  • And finally, "seed" is the seed, the magic number so to speak. When you see an AI-generated image on the Web, the two most important aspects for its reproduction are the prompt and the seed value. Although it is random in Text to Pokémon, nothing stops you from entering a number.

Let's make Disney uncomfortable too...

The final design is erratic, but its essence isn't bad

The only thing left to say is, enjoy! With more than 600,000 runs, it's clear that the idea of creating Pokémon based on other characters has a certain appeal. But hurry up! Nintendo gets nervous with these things, you know.
