Batman first appeared in 1939, but for many fans, their first encounter with the Dark Knight came in the 1960s. While television portrayed a more comedic and “light” Batman, the story was a bit different in alternative media, including the collectible cards designed by Norman Saunders in 1966. These cards show Batman and Robin in very strange situations, ranging from fights with crocodiles and chases in the Wild West to underwater brawls and jousts with medieval warriors.
Saunders was not only known for the quality of his work, but also for his speed and flexibility. Westerns, detective stories, suspense, adult pulps… Saunders’s pencil always responded, allowing him to live comfortably even during difficult times like the Great Depression.
In 1958, Saunders began working for the collectible card company Topps, and it was there that he created his most important series, the Mars Attacks! cards of 1962. Four years later, Saunders and Batman crossed paths, and this is the result. Truly collectible material.
