Despite what different news sites report, there are highly qualified people out there who are having difficulty getting a job. One of them is Angelina Lee, a software engineer who, after being rejected on several occasions, decided to create a fake resume to test whether recruiters actually read what appears on them. Getting a job is not only a traumatizing process for many people, but it also drags along several tedious rituals. One of them is writing, editing, optimizing, and distributing a resume. In some isolated cases, it is also necessary to print physical copies, which adds an extra cost, but today almost everything happens exclusively through digital channels.
Still, there are other barriers in the background, and they are not necessarily technological or budgetary. That brings us to the subreddit where software engineer Angelina Lee explained that she had been rejected on several occasions and decided to conduct an experiment: to check whether company recruiters read applications… by creating what is probably the most successful fake resume on the Web:
The Fake Resume That Went Viral
A quick scan suggests the resume is in order. Good summary, clean structure, the usual. However, it is striking that Angelina is an expert in Mia Khalifa. Another relevant fact is having led a team of six engineers to mine Ethereum on Instagram's servers… but there is more. Much more.
We all know that teamwork is fundamental to the development of any project, and apparently Angelina managed to reinforce her team's cohesion by organizing a potato sack race. She also made sure her group of six engineers received the exact dose of coffee using Antarctic coffee beans with 14-nanometer particles.
“Experience in Pokémon and Donald Trump”
Another fabulous tidbit is optimizing LinkedIn's search algorithm with the use of VoldemortDB and Charizard, and his time at Microsoft had a more political profile by organizing the rally called “Microsofters 4 Trump”. His educational development mentions UC Berkeley, where he obtained the absolute record of the Phi Beta Phi fraternity by drinking the largest amount of glasses of vodka in one night. To top it off, several of the links Angelina prepared simply led to a classic rick roll.
The result? They called her! 90 percent in the callback rate. Notion, ApartmentList, Quizlet, Outschool, LiveRamp, AirBnB, and Blend were some of the companies that contacted her. In its second edition, Reddit (?) was added, along with AirTable, Dropbox, Bolt, Robinhood, Mux, Solv, Grubhub, and Scale.ai (apparently, the only ones who read the resume).
In addition to proving that almost no recruiter reads resumes, she also discovered that there is an essential rule when looking for a software engineering position: either you work at FAANG (Facebook-Amazon-Apple-Netflix-Google), or you don't work at FAANG.
