Mad Max: Fury Road was the film of 2015. It swept the Oscars (taking six in total), but the academy's masterminds denied it the Best Picture statuette. The web debated to exhaustion Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky, the rest of the characters, and a certain feminist profile in its story, but if there is a truly outstanding point, it is in its vehicles. The vehicles of Mad Max are apocalyptic deformed monsters—dirty, rusty, ultra-modified, terrifying. Australian photographer John Platt did extraordinary work photographing them, and today we want to review those images.
Rusted metal. Sharp edges. Tanks and patches sprouting from the sides like tumors. Extended suspensions and gigantic wheels. Integrated weapons. Grotesque ornaments honoring the supremacy of Immortan Joe and his War Boys. Horrible. Beautiful. The vehicles of Mad Max are the closest thing to works of art in a world dead from thirst and hunger. They are not only power in themselves, but they help project and impose it on others. Everything is reused, nothing is wasted. Max's car is repaired and optimized in record time. The War Boys attend to their vehicles with religious devotion. The steering wheels are their 'crucifixes'.
Guilt, loss, the impossible desire to return to the past—all of this and more is reflected in Mad Max's vehicles. Some sources suggest there are 50, others go even higher. It doesn't matter. Today we stay with their curves, their altered geometry, the aggressiveness of their profiles. They are not cars or trucks, but war machines in their purest essence.
