Google's artificial intelligence has made Translate more powerful and capable than ever. Not to mention when it comes to Deepl. These cloud-based systems can decipher complete sentences based on language context, but while they give you the correct words and, for most countries, an audio clip of the phrase, there are still regional accents and unfamiliar sounds they can't translate correctly. To solve that, David Ding, a former Microsoft software engineer, created Localingual, a database to hear how people speak in every part of the world.
How Localingual works
The premise of Localingual is simple: a world map shows each country and divides it into regions as you zoom in. When you click on a region, if the sound has been loaded, the dialect and voice of that location will play. Among the details, you can see each country's flag and listen to its anthem. You can also see how the name of each country is written and pronounced in its original language and in other countries, and whether it was recorded by a man or a woman. But the best part is listening to the different typical phrases of each region, with a description in your language to know their meaning.
Contribute and the future
An interesting detail of Localingual is that you can contribute by recording an audio snippet in your language, helping the platform continue to grow. However, attention: several users have pointed out that some countries have multiple fake or impostor voices registered, due to trolls recording inappropriate phrases for certain countries. For now, Ding wants Localingual to eventually become a "Wikipedia of languages and dialects spoken worldwide", and the truth is that the project is almost there.
