Many games were specially designed to run at a certain frame rate. For example, Elden Ring has a 60 FPS cap, and the same happens with the main Bethesda titles (any unlock can have strange consequences in their physics). On the other side, the new Doom games want every available FPS (meathooking, quick swaps, speed!!), and any excess in online shooters (CS2, Overwatch 2, Fortnite, etc.) is always welcome.

However, there are times when the hardware doesn't help. Modding, overclocking, reducing graphics and resolution... we have accepted many compromises in the past to achieve a better experience, and frame generation, with all the criticism it carries, is shaping up as a great solution to extend the useful life of our components. The key is to find a universal implementation good enough, and ETA PRIME on YouTube decided to explore the latest build of Lossless Scaling.

Lossless Scaling: Universal frame generation at a reasonable price

As its name indicates, Lossless Scaling is first and foremost an upscaling tool similar to the original versions of FSR or DLSS. The simple fact of rendering a game at a lower resolution and enlarging the image with an acceptable/tolerable loss of quality allows gaining speed, but it is the user who must accept that trade-off in the end.

Added to this resource is frame generation, and in its latest version, the LSFG 2.3 system injects up to three intermediate frames, creating a 4X effect. This can be useful when the game barely reaches 60 FPS but the monitor supports a much higher refresh rate (240 Hz), although nothing prevents us from experimenting with lower frame rates.

ETA PRIME's video includes some basic recommendations such as applying a cap in the game at half the monitor's refresh rate (e.g., 30 FPS / 60 Hz) so that when Lossless Scaling doubles the frame rate with its generator, there is no tearing or additional artifacts. It is also necessary to use windowed or borderless mode, since it does not work with exclusive fullscreen. There are many advanced options, and the Web is full of suggestions.

Lossless Scaling is compatible with Windows (that means several portable consoles can use it), and its price ranges between 3.5 and 7 dollars, while in Europe it costs 6.89 euros.
