Have you ever imagined what a Mario game would look like using the Unreal 4 engine? A programmer had the same curiosity and settled the question with Mario is Unreal, a video that recreates the Super Mario 64 plumber in Unreal Engine 4. You can't miss it.
A remake that fans never got
Super Mario 64 is considered by many fans to be the best installment in this platform-adventure saga created by Shigeru Miyamoto. But unlike most games these days, Nintendo never produced a new version of this title with improved graphics or high-definition imagery.
A dedicated fan of Super Mario 64 took it upon himself to create a remake from scratch, quite convincing by the way, using the Unreal 4 engine in a five-minute video titled Mario is Unreal that shows us a Mario model taking full advantage of the power of the new generation.
For this work, the programmer, Aryok Pinera, used the default environments included with the Unreal Engine 4 license. As is well known, Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games, confirmed in March of this year that Unreal Engine 4 is free, with the whole set of tools that this engine includes.
Mario's graphical evolution
Over the last few years we have seen a detailed graphical evolution of Mario from his beginnings on NES to the current Wii U, and while it is known that Nintendo's graphical power usually doesn't compare to its rivals (though it's also clear that games are not judged by their graphics but by the fun they can offer), this recreation of Mario in Unreal Engine 4 is a clear example of what a game starring the most famous plumber could look like if it took advantage of the virtues of this powerful graphics engine.
Who knows, maybe one day Shigeru Miyamoto takes note of this video and surprises us with a Mario in all its splendor using the Unreal 4 engine. Dreaming costs nothing.
