Sony does not officially support original PS2 game discs on PS5; its backward-compatibility support covers compatible PS4 games. A reported PS5SX2 workflow uses a jailbroken console and copies a PS2 game from disc to storage before play. Reports published on October 10, 2026, describe the demonstration, while NanospeedGamer’s Spanish-language video explains and shows the copy process. How the reported PS2 disc workflow works

NanospeedGamer explains and demonstrates the PS2 disc-copy process in this Spanish-language video.

PS5SX2 is a community-made port of the PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 consoles. In NanospeedGamer’s demonstration, the disc is copied to the console’s internal storage; the game is then played from the copied data. That is a different experience from inserting a disc into an unmodified PS5 and launching it through Sony’s backward-compatibility feature.

What PS5SX2 supports

The PS5SX2 project instructions describe a PCSX2 port for a jailbroken PS5. They list .iso, .chd, .cso and .zso game files as inputs and require users to supply their own PS2 BIOS and game files.

The project lists resolution scaling up to 6× and 4K output. Some games are too demanding for 6× scaling on a regular PS5, so those figures do not apply to every title.

What about PS3 discs?

Sword told Tom’s Hardware that PS3-disc support was planned with a separate RPCS3 port then under development. That is a future intention, not a current PS5SX2 feature.
