Trying to determine the origin of the white cane is a complex and conflictive process, but that is not what brings us here today. Ideally, every blind person could have access to a total restoration of vision; however, the challenges faced by medicine are gigantic. One of the available alternatives is to apply technology to provide greater independence, and the people behind the STRAP project seek that by trying to “retire” the white cane, in favor of a harness with sensors that transmits vibrations in real time to warn the user about nearby obstacles.
Although my general state of health is quite poor, I must admit that I am truly privileged regarding my eyes, considering the countless hours I have spent in front of the screen. Unfortunately, available numbers (year 2015) indicate that 940 million people have some level of vision loss, while the most serious cases reach almost 300 million people. People whom society will quickly identify as “disabled”, but who do not want to lose or negotiate their independence.
Introducing STRAP
With that in mind, we find the STRAP project, which has a huge objective ahead: to develop and commercialize a substitute for the classic “white cane”. The system is based on a harness equipped with a network of sensors, which transmit vibrations when they detect obstacles for the head, torso, and lower body. Detection also includes potholes, holes, and stairs.
It is very easy to use, so it does not demand extensive training or special preparation, and it also offers an “emergency mode” with integrated GPS, which contacts a designated person with the user's location. As if that were not enough, STRAP has Bluetooth support for its link with a smartphone, and most importantly: The user's hands are free at all times.
Pre-order and pricing
The official STRAP page announces that the harness is available for pre-order with a deposit of only 25 dollars. Until July 31, its special price was 250 dollars, but its final cost will be 350 dollars, with first deliveries scheduled for summer 2021.
