Adding subtitles to a video is a tedious task. There are commercial tools that make it easier, but good free options are very few (YouTube's automatic subtitles). That's why we want to present you with Subly, a free and online alternative.

Insert subtitles

With Subly you can automatically transcribe a video's audio and then edit the subtitles paragraph by paragraph with great ease. This way you'll ensure the subtitles are correct, and if you notice an error you can make the necessary changes. You can also customize the appearance of the subtitles, changing the font, format and position of the text in the video, among other functions. When you finish, you have two options: insert the subtitles into the video or download them individually.

Getting started with Subly

The first thing you have to do is create a free account on Subly (you need to enter a validation code). When you log in with your credentials, you'll see the platform's control panel.

At the top right you'll find the button to upload videos. From there, upload your clip to the web, and choose the language for the transcription (for now it only supports English). Then just click "Upload". The environment doesn't support all video formats, so check carefully. Fortunately, uploading the clip is quite fast.

Editing and designing subtitles

When the upload finishes, a new button appears (in the three-dot vertical menu) from which you can edit and design the subtitles. In this panel the subtitles appear in short paragraphs, which makes synchronization and text editing easier. From the editor you can do the following tasks:

  • Change text styles
  • Change the font
  • Change the text color
  • Change the outline color
  • Change the position of the subtitles
  • And more

Very good transcription

Once you've corrected the texts, you can embed them in the video from “Add subtitles to the video”. With the “Download subtitles” button you'll get an SRT file to download them separately.

Final thoughts

Subly's feature is really very good for transcribing and inserting subtitles in English (US, British and Indian). In our tests with a video in Spanish and another in Portuguese, everything worked quite well; only a few words were left in their original language.
