There are things about old computers that we certainly do not miss. Manually configuring IRQs, fighting with Himem.sys to free three additional kilobytes to load the mouse driver, floppy disks that stopped working after second use… the list goes on. The advances have been notable, to such a point that it would be very difficult to go back, but we must also ask ourselves what price we paid, what we sacrificed in terms of environments, design, and compatibility.
To find these answers, I have an idea: Go back for a moment to Windows for Workgroups 3.11, which turned 31 last Friday. The pieter.com portal gives us an excellent opportunity to explore that version of Windows directly in our browsers, without downloading additional software or entering the double cycle of installation (otherwise, you would need to prepare MS-DOS first):

The initial download of the environment barely exceeds 42 megabytes, but once that process finishes, its execution is nearly instant. In fact, Windows greets us with the sound of an old dial-up modem... and a connection error. The gray tones with the blue window title are a true flashback, but 3.11 for Workgroups reminds us that scroll bars were once 'real' scroll bars and not those anemic, nearly invisible lines we must tolerate in modern interfaces. Even the icons themselves have more personality (the regression of Windows 10/11 has been enormous in that aspect).
What do we find among the games? Shareware versions of inexhaustible classics. Commander Keen, Prince of Persia, Stunts, The Incredible Machine, SimCity 2000… we have given many hours of our lives to these titles, and personally, I like seeing them there. Now, that doesn't mean they all work correctly: I have found more than one error during execution, and Wacky Wheels even went so far as to hang the environment, but it's nothing a refresh can't fix.
