Your Free Weekend Game: Legend of Keepers
Your free game of the weekend: Legend of Keepers

After having returned (and escaped, right?) to the dungeons of the classic Prince of Persia, this weekend's free game proposal is... to manage them. That's right! In Legend of Keepers you'll take on the role of the boss and neutralize the heroes who want to seize the treasure, all under a very corporate profile. This includes acquiring monsters and traps, managing rest periods, paying taxes (!), performance reviews, training sessions, and other details that add flavor to this roguelite.

There's always something to enjoy about so-called reverse games. For example, many players believe that the Xenomorph campaign in Alien vs. Predator is the best of all, and I definitely recommend finding a copy of Carrion to shred humans in a secret laboratory. However, I must also mention the Dungeon Management genre. The classic Dungeon Keeper by Bullfrog comes to mind immediately, but I'd be making a huge mistake if I forgot about Dwarf Fortress or RimWorld.

Fortunately, the latest giveaway from Good Old Games points in that general direction with Legend of Keepers. Its name reminds us of the seven million games that exist for mobile devices, and it certainly doesn't have RimWorld's complexity, but we're dealing with a dungeon manager with attitude that will surely steal many hours from you, and a similar amount of insults.

Legend of Keepers: Don't disappoint the boss

Legend of Keepers turns us into members of the Dungeon Company, whose sole objective is to protect the multiple treasures kept in its dungeons. Our mission is to crush each group of heroes that dares to set foot on company territory, or alternatively, reduce their morale to dust and enjoy watching them flee in despair.

Training is short but adequate, following the spirit of "easy to learn, hard to master"

Always check the stats of your opponents, and those of your monsters. There might be an extra advantage...

The defense process is based on a combination of monsters, traps, spells, and the boss waiting in the last room. In general, our damage capability is divided into three: physical damage, elemental damage, and morale damage to the group. Add to this different buffs/debuffs (burn, poison, bleeding wound, etc.), and special actions that depend on the position of the monsters. For example, a monster can attack the opponent's entire area or a specific hero, but its position on the field also serves (among other things) to generate shields that protect ally monsters, or inject haste that makes them attack earlier.

The "empty room" allows us to throw a spell at the group of heroes to damage their health/morale, or improve the stats of our monsters

Attacking the heroes' morale is perfectly valid. And they run out like rats!

But that's only half the strategy. As dungeon administrators, it's our responsibility to manage monster downtime (their stress increases with each death, and if it reaches the limit they fall into burnout), conduct training sessions, resolve internal company issues, raid nearby villages, acquire items, and pay taxes to a group of fiscal vampires who really enjoy hero blood (wink, wink).

There's a lot of work ahead...

Your monsters can die... but don't overdo it, or you'll pay the price with burnout, and even strikes

Of course, climbing the corporate ladder is not easy. Micromanagement exerts more pressure than we think, and sooner or later, the game forces us to face better-prepared heroes with greater resistances. The boss at the end is tough and will help us solve many fights... but we can't overuse that either.

Each week enables an action. Think twice!

The boss has this battle under control, but he's not immortal. The idea is that heroes never reach the end... or reach the last room as dust

In short, don't be fooled by the title. Legend of Keepers has the exact dose of frustration and entertainment, that which makes us come back for more every time. To finish, don't sleep on it! At the time of writing, there are less than 36 hours left in the giveaway. Claim your copy and enjoy!
