Apple announced on October 31 that Alibaba’s Qwen is planned for selected Apple Intelligence experiences in China, including Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Apple scheduled developer testing to begin November 4, with a broader iPhone rollout planned alongside iOS 27.3 in December. The announcement describes a China-specific plan, not a worldwide integration. Apple’s announcement sets out Qwen’s role in selected features; NeoTeo previously covered reports of a China-specific Apple model in earlier coverage.
Where Apple plans to use Qwen
Apple says Qwen may assist with certain Siri requests, including questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations. In Writing Tools, Qwen is planned to generate original content from scratch. Apple also names Visual Intelligence as a supported experience.
Those are selected entry points, not a replacement of Apple’s models across the full Apple Intelligence suite. Apple’s planned China feature set also includes tools such as Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, photo search, summaries and Live Translation. The initial update excludes Siri AI and other next-generation Apple Intelligence capabilities announced at WWDC 2026.
The iPhones and language settings Apple lists
For the initial iPhone rollout, Apple names iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone Air. It lists English and Simplified Chinese for the device and Siri language settings.
CGTN reported that Alibaba described two eligibility routes: users could have bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or have both their device location and Apple Account country or region set to China. That account of eligibility comes from Alibaba as reported by CGTN; Apple’s announcement lists compatible models and languages but does not give this full rule.
What the reported user controls cover
China Daily reported that Apple would ask users before a question, document or image is sent to Qwen. Users can choose whether to enable the integration and what to share. Alibaba said requests and responses generated through the integration would not be used to train its models.
AirPods requirements apply to face-to-face translation
Apple’s AirPods condition is for face-to-face Live Translation. The listed models are AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and later, and AirPods Max 2. They need current firmware and must be paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. This requirement applies to that translation feature, separate from Qwen’s Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence experiences.
Apple’s announced schedule
Apple scheduled developer testing in the latest iOS beta to begin November 4, 2026. The broader iPhone rollout is planned for December 2026 alongside iOS 27.3. Apple says support for other platforms will follow after necessary approvals.
