Apple told 9to5Mac on October 26, 2026, that it was aware of an inner-display issue affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units. The company advised owners who experience a display problem to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
What owners should do
9to5Mac also reported that AppleCare+ is not required for this issue and that customers who bought their iPhone Duo through a carrier should contact AppleCare directly.
What the U.S. repair estimates cover
Separate U.S. out-of-warranty estimates reported on October 14, 2026, put inner-display damage at $999 and cover-layer damage at $49. These are estimates for two different paid-repair categories, separate from the issue-specific replacement response Apple described on October 26.
Apple says a personalized screen-repair estimate follows an inspection. Taxes or shipping may apply, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own fees. Its iPhone screen-repair page explains the general estimate process.
What iFixit’s hinge test observed
In iFixit’s teardown, fluorescent powder entered the hinge during a test, and the mechanism began to creak. The video also shows the battery adhesive being released electrically and the inner display being removed.
iFixit gave the phone a provisional repairability score of 5/10 and estimated three to five hours for a folding-screen replacement, according to iPhon.fr’s teardown coverage.
