A civil complaint filed Oct. 21, 2026, in Benton County, Arkansas, alleges that photographer Russell Bloodworth used Grok to alter a child’s school photographs and that xAI lacked reasonable safeguards. The plaintiffs, identified in court papers as Jane Doe and her daughter Sarah Roe, name Bloodworth, xAI LLC and xAI Corp. as defendants and seek unspecified damages. The allegations have not been adjudicated.
What the complaint alleges
The complaint says Sarah Roe was under five during the school period at issue and alleges that Bloodworth photographed her at school four times. It also says the Department of Homeland Security contacted Jane Doe during the law-enforcement operation and told her that some of her daughter’s school photographs had been altered.
The allegations about the photographs and xAI’s safeguards are claims made in the civil case. They are separate from the criminal prosecution of Bloodworth.
The criminal case is separate
Bloodworth pleaded not guilty in the criminal case, according to reporting on the proceedings. On Sept. 21, 2026, he appeared at an omnibus hearing. KNWA/KFTA reported that about 60 seized electronic devices were still being searched at that time.
xAI’s separate lawsuit
xAI also sued Bloodworth in a separate case. Its complaint sought reasonable expenses incurred defending lawsuits brought by alleged victims, including alleged reputational harm. In that filing, xAI asserted that it builds technological safeguards. That position belongs to xAI’s case against Bloodworth, not the civil complaint filed by Jane Doe and Sarah Roe.
