The best free Microsoft Office alternative depends on whether you need browser apps, offline desktop work, or office software on your own server. If your spreadsheets rely on Excel VBA macros, check that workflow before switching: LibreOffice says the code may need changes, and Excel for the web does not run VBA macros.

What Microsoft’s free web tier includes

In the United States, Microsoft offers browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to people signed in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft’s US page lists 5 GB of OneDrive storage. For the collaboration it describes, files must be saved in and shared from OneDrive. The free tier provides web apps, not the installable desktop apps included with paid subscriptions. (Microsoft Support; Microsoft’s US offer)

That makes the web tier a practical fit when browser access and OneDrive meet your needs. It is a different choice from installing a desktop suite for offline work.

Choose by how you work

Andy Malone MVP’s video shows LibreOffice and FreeOffice interfaces during an office-suite comparison.

The options differ in where you edit documents and who runs the service. Revista Cloud Computing’s 2026 comparison describes LibreOffice as a desktop suite for offline work, groups Google Docs, Zoho Office, ONLYOFFICE, and CryptPad among browser-collaboration options, and identifies Nextcloud Office and Collabora Online as self-hosting routes.

Your working needOptions described in the comparisonPractical trade-off
Desktop work without an internet connectionLibreOfficeA local desktop suite; check complex Office formatting and VBA-dependent files before moving them.
Browser-based collaborationGoogle Docs, Zoho Office, ONLYOFFICE, CryptPadA browser-first route; the comparison describes these as collaboration options.
Run the office service on infrastructure you manageNextcloud Office, Collabora OnlineYou take on server operation and administration. Free software does not make infrastructure, maintenance, backups, or support cost-free.

Self-hosting is most relevant when an organization wants to manage its own infrastructure and can take on that ongoing work. A free software license by itself does not cover the cost of running and maintaining a server.

Will Office files and Excel macros work the same way?

LibreOffice can open and save DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files, but that does not guarantee that a complex document will keep its layout exactly. LibreOffice’s conversion guidance says some formatting and layout differences may require manual adjustments. If a document’s precise appearance matters, check the actual file after opening and saving it. (LibreOffice’s file-format guidance)

Macros need a separate check. Excel VBA and LibreOffice macros use different objects and methods, and LibreOffice says VBA code may need editing in its Basic IDE. Excel for the web also cannot run VBA macros. So a VBA-dependent workbook is not a straightforward move to either LibreOffice or Microsoft’s free browser-based Excel. (LibreOffice Calc Guide; Microsoft’s Office for the web description)

If your work depends on macros, treat desktop Excel as a separate requirement and test the specific workbook in any replacement before relying on it.
