One of the most frustrating aspects of YouTube (and other similar platforms) is subtitles. Their automatic generation leaves a lot to be desired, but there are also cases where they simply don't exist, and the same happens with transcriptions. The portal Freesubtitles.ai seeks to fill that gap by applying a bit of artificial intelligence: if the video or audio does not exceed one hour in duration or 300 megabytes in size, you will be able to generate subtitles, transcriptions, and even free translations quickly.
Hunting for subtitles on the Web is an art, and although we have recommended very good sites in the past, there will always be a short film, a documentary, a demo, or 'something' that has no transcription or translation of any kind. If you find yourself in that situation, don't despair! With the help of algorithms and the portal Freesubtitles.ai, you will be able to generate automatic translations and transcriptions online, without creating accounts or profiles.
How to generate subtitles automatically with Freesubtitles.ai
The limits of Freesubtitles.ai are very well defined: Both video and audio (yes, you can upload MP3 files if you want) must not exceed one hour in duration, nor 300 MB in size. That means you won't be able to translate a complete film, but Freesubtitles.ai will work well with short films, documentaries, and podcasts.
Once the process is finished, Freesubtitles.ai will present secondary options to increase or reduce the size of the subtitles, and most importantly: download links in different formats. If you choose a transcription from English to English, you will most likely be able to get a copy in SRT and TXT, but if you ordered a translation of the text, you will have to download the file with the VTT extension (don't worry, it's easy to convert if compatibility issues arise).
At the bottom you will find a long list with technical information about the video, and a raw copy of the transcription with its markers. Needless to say, Freesubtitles.ai's work is not perfect, but it serves as an excellent starting point to edit and correct subtitles.
For now, Freesubtitles.ai only supports uploading local video and audio. Its interface has a section to enter URLs and enable automatic download, but that will be a premium feature. I imagine that over time Freesubtitles.ai will abandon the 'free' or further adjust the limits of its free edition, however, I think it's worth trying.
