La Razón reported that Iryo CEO Fabrizio Favara told a Senate committee on October 5, 2026, that LZB-related signaling was the most frequent issue Iryo drivers reported on the Madrid–Seville line, excluding exceptional events. He said a loss of train-to-ground signaling could stop a train and take considerable time to reconnect. The Senate’s official record lists Favara’s appearance at 11 a.m. The Urda collision was reported to have occurred on October 28.

Spain’s ERTMS Level 2 plan

In its April 25, 2025, update, Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility described a €700 million renewal program for the whole Madrid–Seville line. It said 97% of that investment had been executed or was in advanced execution at the time. The program covered track, signaling, telecommunications, electrification, infrastructure and protection work, with ERTMS Level 2 deployment targeted for the remainder of 2025 and 2026. The Ministry’s update describes a line-wide renewal, not a signaling-only budget.
