GTA 6 is designed to retarget NPC animations on the fly, adapting the same motion to characters with different heights and body shapes. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described the feature in remarks published on August 27, 2026, and said it could help characters line up during fights, while sitting in cars and in other interactions.
Animation retargeting means adjusting a motion so it fits a character’s proportions. That matters when the same action has to work across a more varied cast.
What on-the-fly retargeting means
Nelson said NPCs in GTA 6 would have more variation in height and body shape than in earlier Rockstar games. He described how characters with different body types had previously shared animation sets, which could make the same movement line up differently on each body.
To illustrate the difference, Nelson compared a 5'6" character with one who is 6'2". He said the team developed a system to retarget animations on the fly, adjusting them to different proportions.
Fights, car seating and other interactions
Nelson named fighting and sitting in cars as examples, along with interactions between characters and with the environment. GTA 6’s varied NPC population is set in Vice City and the surrounding areas of Leonida.
Why current consoles matter
Nelson linked the system’s feasibility to memory on the latest consoles and to Rockstar’s experience developing games together.
