SculptrVR has received very good reviews since its debut on Steam a year ago. It was quickly labeled “Minecraft in virtual reality”, but that comparison did it no harm—quite the opposite. The next step for SculptrVR is to expand its reach, and here we have a new special edition compatible with Google Daydream. The number of “Daydream Ready” smartphones doesn't exceed half a dozen, but it's still good to see developers willing to offer support.
The main problem affecting virtual reality is the lack of content. We all agree it requires very expensive hardware, but that aspect can improve over time. Both the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift have been on the market for a year, and honestly we have a hard time naming a memorable VR title. Still, there are games that are fighting their way, and one of them is SculptrVR. Its price on Steam is $20. It works with both headsets, and having been designed for virtual reality makes it a much more refined project compared to Minecraft.
The developers have confirmed that the PlayStation VR version is on the way, but they have another stop first: Google Daydream. Mountain View first talked about Daydream in May 2016, the Daydream View headset appeared in October, and so far only four smartphones meet the requirements. Nevertheless, those conditions didn't stop SculptrVR from arriving on Daydream with a solid version that also delivers multiplayer support (up to a maximum of six people). Creating and destroying worlds in virtual reality no longer has to be a solitary activity.
SculptrVR is available for download on the Daydream store (and by extension, on the Google Play Store) at a price of five dollars. That's not excessive if we consider that the PC version costs four times more. At the same time, we hope it serves as a reference for other developers to join the platform. Experience alone is no longer enough in virtual reality. You also need games.
