Alphabet’s shares fell sharply in the session after the company announced its Q3 2026 results on October 28. The quarter, which ended September 30, brought a mixed set of figures: revenue and operating income rose, while net income and diluted earnings per share fell. A loss on equity securities reduced both earnings measures. Contemporary reports on October 29 described declines ranging from nearly 11% to about 13% at different points in the day.
What Alphabet reported for Q3
Alphabet reported revenue of $127.577 billion, up 25% year over year, and operating income of $40.576 billion, up 30%. Net income was $26.468 billion, down from $34.979 billion a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share, or EPS, fell to $2.12 from $2.87. The figures are from Alphabet’s Q3 2026 earnings release.
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
| Revenue | $102.346 billion | $127.577 billion |
| Operating income | $31.228 billion | $40.576 billion |
| Net income | $34.979 billion | $26.468 billion |
| Diluted EPS | $2.87 | $2.12 |
| Google Search & other revenue | $56.567 billion | $63.350 billion |
| Google Cloud revenue | $15.157 billion | $30.709 billion |
Why operating income rose while net income fell
Operating income measures profit from business operations before items such as interest and investment gains or losses. Alphabet’s operating income increased even as its bottom-line net income declined, in part because the company recorded a net $8.664 billion loss on equity securities. Alphabet said that loss reduced net income by $6.7 billion and diluted EPS by $0.55 after tax. The securities figure includes realized and unrealized gains and losses.
Alphabet also reported $26.170 billion of net income available to common stockholders, after $298 million in preferred-stock dividends. That measure is distinct from consolidated net income of $26.468 billion.
Search, AI Mode and Google Cloud
Google Search & other revenue rose 12% year over year to $63.350 billion. Alphabet said Search query growth was its fastest in five years, while Google Cloud revenue more than doubled, rising 103% to $30.709 billion. Cloud operating income increased to $11.121 billion from $3.594 billion.
The revenue growth rate for Search was lower than Cloud’s, even as query growth reached the stated five-year high. That contrast helps explain why investors could see growth in Search activity alongside concerns about how effectively new search experiences generate advertising revenue.
In an October 29 report, Ars Technica said Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler described an AI Mode query as generating less advertising revenue than a comparable traditional web search. The reported explanation was that AI Mode queries carried fewer ads and those ads were priced lower. The figures in Alphabet’s earnings release do not quantify revenue per AI Mode query.
Ars Technica also reported that company guidance put total 2026 spending at $195 billion to $205 billion and set an AI investment target above $300 billion for 2027. Those are reported spending expectations, separate from the $51.355 billion Alphabet spent on property and equipment in Q3.
What free cash flow says across different periods
Free cash flow is operating cash flow minus purchases of property and equipment. Alphabet’s quarterly figure was negative $9.065 billion in Q3 2026, compared with negative $5.855 billion in Q2. The trailing-12-month figure through Q3 was positive $19.747 billion. The quarterly and trailing-year figures cover different periods, so they describe different cash-flow windows.
| Period | Free cash flow |
| Q4 2025 | $24.551 billion |
| Q1 2026 | $10.116 billion |
| Q2 2026 | −$5.855 billion |
| Q3 2026 | −$9.065 billion |
| Trailing 12 months through Q3 2026 | $19.747 billion |
A negative quarterly figure captures one three-month period; the trailing-12-month total includes the preceding four quarters. Alphabet’s Q3 release reported both measures alongside the quarter’s $51.355 billion in purchases of property and equipment.
What the reported share decline looked like
Reports published or updated on October 29 put Alphabet’s decline at nearly 11% to about 13%, with the figures reflecting observations at different points in the session. They describe the scale of the market reaction, not one common measurement. The quarter’s results included strong operating and Cloud growth, lower net income and EPS, negative quarterly free cash flow, and a reported gap in advertising revenue per AI Mode query.
